Artist Statement
Place is a repository of cultural and personal experience. Our understanding of it is cognitive; an act of the mind. Eventually, whether consciously or not, a place imprints itself on the individual or culture as much as the they do on their environment. It is a reciprocal, symbiotic exchange and one that is necessary for a sense of ownership.
I explore specific places and their unique set of markers whether cultural, historical, political, economic or otherwise, to tell a story. Since every place embodies a different identity each requires a different artistic execution. What is right visually and conceptually for Los Angeles is not necessarily right for New York. I try to match the needs of the place with the style of artistic execution. As such, the results tend to be as diverse as the places they represent.
Peter Walker received a joint Bachelor of Arts in English and Visual Arts from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT., graduating with Cum Laude and University Honors distinctions. He later studied under painter Jeremy Morgan and critical theorists Okwui Enwezor and Mark Van Proyen at the San Francisco Art Institute where he received his MFA in 2008 with an emphasis in painting and critical theory. Walker is currently teaching art and maintaining a studio in Los Angeles, CA.
